| Crazy Cable |
So I’m old enough to remember when cable was new. At that time, the names of cable stations did a good job of reflecting their programming. AMC was for American Movie Classics and they played American classic movies. A&E stood for Arts and Entertainment and they showed shows about the arts, biographies of artists (and others) and critically-acclaimed movies. MTV was Music Television and they played music videos and concerts and stuff related to music. VH-1 stood for Video Hits One and they played hit videos.
So what they hell happened? AMC still does classic movies and now they do shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men that will eventually be classic TV so I ain’t mad at them. But MTV … really? It was bad enough when they went all Real World and Road Rules on us, but now? Seriously, every time I turn past MTV it’s on Teen Moms or 16 and Pregnant. It’s become Maternity Television. Their mascot used to be the space guy, it should probably be replaced by a crying baby with a frazzled adolescent mother.
VH-1 isn’t better. At least they do show a few videos in the morning, the rest of the day is a virtual hot mess of reality crap. Remember Flavor of Love, I Love New York and Celebrity Rehab? Now we get arrogant athletes on The T.O. Show and The Ochocinco Show as well as demanding divas on Basketball Wives (which should be called Basketball Baby Mommas) and What Chilli Wants.
And while we are at it, can someone tell me what the hell morbidly obese people (Heavy), crazy people who can’t throw stuff away (Hoarders) and hopeless drug addicts and drunks (Intervention) have to do with Arts and Entertainment?
